In a newspaper interview, Dr. Klaus Eichhorn discussed the EU’s 2035 targets and noted that every electric car still uses a 12 V lead-acid battery.
In an interview with the Obermain Tagblatt, MOLL Managing Director Dr. Klaus Eichhorn said the company supports climate goals but considers the EU timeline for phasing out combustion engines unrealistic. He argued that combustion engines could remain in use for decades if powered by synthetic fuels (e-fuels).
Eichhorn stressed that, alongside the lithium traction battery, every electric car contains a 12 V lead-acid battery that powers safety-critical systems. He also raised questions about raw-material dependence, purchase prices, charging infrastructure and residual values.
MOLL plans to keep producing starter batteries for cars and trucks beyond 2035, is investing in production automation and is developing technology transfer and licensing as a second line of business.
