MOLL plans to start 1 GWh sodium-ion battery production in Lichtenfels/Schney in September 2026, backed by an investment of around €103 million.
MOLL Batterien is preparing to manufacture sodium-ion batteries (SIB) at a new site in the Lichtenfels/Schney industrial area. The plant is planned with an initial annual capacity of 1 GWh and will create 126 new jobs, while the main factory in Bad Staffelstein continues its production. The project, worth around €103 million, is supported by the State of Bavaria and the European Union.
According to management, production is targeted to start in September 2026. MOLL, which builds up to 1.2 million starter batteries a year in Bad Staffelstein, is also expanding its business through licensing and technology-transfer partnerships.
- Initial focus: commercial and industrial energy storage
- Medium term: use as starter and auxiliary batteries in vehicles
- No need for critical raw materials such as lithium or cobalt
