MOLL announced an €80 million plan to produce sodium-ion batteries with 1 GWh capacity in a modern plant it is taking over in Lichtenfels/Schney.
According to a local press report, MOLL plans to move into sodium-ion battery production by taking over a modern, vacant factory building in Lichtenfels/Schney. The first phase foresees an €80 million investment, a capacity of 1 GWh and 120 jobs, with further capacity increases expected in later years.
The company produces around 1.4 million lead-acid batteries a year in Bad Staffelstein and continues to invest there as well. The sodium-ion batteries are initially intended for containerised storage systems that buffer wind and solar power.
- Sodium is an abundant, low-cost raw material
- Lower production cost and fire risk than lithium batteries
- Goal of reducing dependence on Asian suppliers
