Why 12 V systems are reaching their limits, what 48 V mild-hybrid architecture offers, and why workshops will need new diagnostic tools.
As the number of electrical consumers in modern cars grows, the 12-volt system is under strain. Since power rises with voltage, manufacturers have settled on 48 volts as the optimal level for hybrid vehicles.
According to the article, 48 V architecture brings:
- Electric drive for turbochargers, water pumps, brake boosters, steering and A/C
- Less reliance on belts and operating fluids that wear quickly
- A 48 V motor-generator that assists the engine while driving and recovers energy under braking
The 12 V system remains for ignition, the engine ECU and lighting. MSG Equipment noted that it develops diagnostic equipment for these technologies and was working on the multifunctional MS005 bench.
