Typical signs of alternator failure, a first check via fault codes, and precise diagnosis with the MS015A/MS016A testers and test benches.
The alternator powers every electrical consumer in the vehicle, and its failure can leave the car stranded. Typical symptoms:
- The car won’t start in the morning despite a fairly new battery
- Headlights dimming, especially at idle
- Glitches in multimedia, the instrument cluster, A/C or power windows
- Whining or humming that rises with engine speed, unstable low-rpm running
Diagnosis can start with reading fault codes such as P0560, P0562, P0563 or P0620. The MS015A or MS016A testers control the alternator independently of the engine ECU, showing on the vehicle whether the fault lies in the alternator or in wiring, connectors or the ECU. A removed alternator can be tested on the MS005A, MS002A or MS006 benches to pinpoint regulator, winding or diode bridge faults, opening the way to repair.
