The alternator’s weak points, how overload and misuse affect it, and what to do to extend its life.
In combustion-engine cars the alternator is the main source of electricity. MSG Equipment says failures stem from design features, environmental effects, overload, misuse and related components.
- Weak points: slip rings and brushes, the overrunning pulley (lasting about 100,000 km), the digital voltage regulator and bearings stressed by incorrect belt tension.
- Corrosion: dust, moisture, road salt and leaking fluids can ruin the alternator for good.
- Overload: running at full capacity, especially in winter, overheats the unit.
Advice: keep an eye on battery charge, don’t jump-start another car with your engine running, never test by disconnecting battery terminals, protect the alternator when washing the engine and fix leaks promptly.
