Dim headlights, a flickering charge light and a battery that keeps going flat point to alternator trouble. MSG Equipment explains bench testing.
MSG Equipment reminds readers that electrical faults are common and that the alternator is the car’s main power source. If it fails, the battery takes over for a while – but its main job is starting the engine.
Faults can be mechanical (housing, fasteners, bearings, clutch and pulley) or electrical (winding short circuits, diode bridge or voltage regulator failure). Warning signs include:
- dim or flickering headlights,
- a battery warning light that comes on or blinks with the engine running,
- knocking or whistling noises and a battery that keeps discharging.
Left unattended, a fault can even burn the wiring; regular bench testing lets technicians find the cause quickly.
