Alternator and starter diagnostics: frequently asked questions

Six questions workshops most often ask before buying alternator and starter test equipment, answered by MSG Equipment.

MSG Equipment notes that demand for alternator and starter test equipment has grown, as more than 10 years have passed since new-generation alternators appeared. The company answers its followers’ most common questions:

  • Can a starter be tested without load? Yes, the relay and motor can be checked on the bench without load.
  • Do the benches read COM protocols? BSS, LIN1 and LIN2 are supported.
  • What load is needed? 50–70 A is enough; if the AC component stays below 10% of rated load, windings and diodes are fine.
  • Why a bench if I have a tester? A bench tests the removed unit under near-real load.

It also recommends the MS0204 puller set for rear rotor bearings and dedicated cables for the MS005 and MS008.
