Diagnostic equipment for automotive alternators

A test bench is the reliable way to assess an alternator. MSG Equipment explains load testing, the AC component and its range of benches.

According to MSG Equipment, the only reliable way to assess an alternator is to test it on a bench that applies a load and reads the output and the AC ripple component. Because output current depends on rotor speed, the unit’s current-speed characteristic must be taken into account when setting the load.

Experience shows a load of 50–70 A is usually sufficient to assess condition, and if the AC component stays below 10% of the set load, the field winding and rectifier can be considered healthy.

MSG Equipment benches offer smooth speed and load adjustment: the MS002 COM tests 12/24 V units at up to 200/100 A, the MS004 COM 12 V units at up to 100 A, the MS006 at up to 50 A, while the MS005 is designed for comprehensive testing of 12/24/48 V alternators.
