How long can gasoline be stored?

Petrol degrades over time through evaporation, additive breakdown and oxidation. Containers, storage times and what to watch out for.

Drivers who stock up on fuel ahead of price rises often forget that petrol has a shelf life. MSG Equipment explains that in leaky containers the light, octane-boosting fractions evaporate, additives break down and oxidation produces gum and sediment.

  • In sealed plastic cans, no more than about a year; aluminium containers last longer.
  • Petrol with additives should not be stored for more than 3 months.
  • Fuel left in a car tank starts to lose its properties within 2–3 months due to temperature swings.
