The differences between dynamic, steel and fabric tow ropes, and selection criteria such as length, tensile strength and working load.
A tow rope belongs in every boot for situations such as getting stuck in snow or a serious breakdown. Three main types made of different materials are available.
- Dynamic rope: stores energy as it stretches and jerks a stuck vehicle free; ideal for off-roaders.
- Steel cable: very strong and able to tow minibuses or SUVs, but prone to corrosion and not very elastic.
- Fabric strap: light and safe, sufficient for small passenger cars.
When choosing, consider length (typically 4–6 m), tensile strength, maximum working load, hook type and stretch.
