EV diagnostics: what a modern workshop needs

MSG Equipment outlines the essentials for EV service: a brand-specific diagnostic scanner, high-voltage battery module testers and technician training.

As electric vehicles spread, workshop priorities are shifting from combustion engines to high-voltage systems, complex electronics and software diagnostics. MSG Equipment argues that service centres need to rebuild their equipment and skills to stay competitive.

The first step is a scanner that goes beyond OBD-II to manufacturer-specific functions. LOKI PRO, built for Tesla and Rivian, reads and clears fault codes, shows live data, runs calibrations and service functions, and keeps up with new vehicle software through an update subscription.

  • MS800: supports Ni-MH and Li-ion modules and tests many modules at once, ideal for sorting, matching and cell balancing during a full pack rebuild.
  • MS801: optimised for Li-ion with a higher discharge current for faster tests; measures SOH, imbalance and internal resistance and balances packs before installation.

MSG stresses that equipment only delivers with trained staff, and offers online courses on the LOKI scanner and on high-voltage batteries.
