EPS diagnostics and repair: weak points and the MS561

Typical failure causes of electro-mechanical power steering, diagnosis with the MS561 controller and why repair often makes economic sense.

Since the 2000s electro-mechanical power steering (EPS) has replaced hydraulic systems; MSG Equipment says 98% of light vehicles produced today use it. EPS saves fuel, needs no routine maintenance and enables features such as lane keeping and automatic parking.

The main cause of failure is a torn boot letting in water and dirt, which leads to corrosion and wear. Torque sensor faults, unprotected control units and impacts on bad roads are also common.

With its cable set, the MS561 controller tests columns, racks and pumps of more than 4,000 vehicle models off the car, including FlexRay-controlled units used by BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz. The article notes that repair is usually far cheaper than buying a new unit.
