SOH and EOL criteria, simple checks via range and charging, BMS reading at workshops, AI-based tests and module testing with the MS800 after a failure.
The traction battery is an EV’s most expensive part and every battery loses capacity over time. MSG Equipment highlights two criteria: SOH (State of Health), showing remaining capacity, and EOL, marking end of life based on cycle count.
- For drivers: a clear drop in range, more energy needed for a full charge, and in-car apps (e.g. Leaf Spy for the Nissan Leaf).
- At the workshop: scanners that read BMS data (e.g. Consult 3+ for Nissan, LOKI for Tesla, Xentry for Mercedes).
- A newer approach: devices that analyse static and dynamic test data via OBD using artificial intelligence.
If the battery fails, the MS800 tester measures each module’s capacity to show which cells have degraded.
