Measuring SOC, SOH, module imbalance, internal resistance and self-discharge in high-voltage batteries, with MSG MS800 and MS801 testers.
The high-voltage battery is both the power source and one of the most expensive components of electric and hybrid vehicles. Several parameters are assessed together to judge its condition objectively:
- State of charge (SOC): determined from module voltages; a module noticeably lower than the rest is likely faulty.
- State of health (SOH): degradation is measured by comparing energy delivered over a full charge-discharge cycle with the nominal value.
- Module imbalance (ΔV): the most common issue; beyond a critical threshold the battery management system shuts the pack down.
- Internal resistance: rising values cause heating, lower efficiency and power loss under acceleration.
- Self-discharge: reveals hidden problems that standard tests miss.
MSG Equipment’s 36-channel MS800 is designed for hybrid packs such as Toyota, Lexus and Honda and for module balancing, while the MS801 targets modern lithium-ion batteries, including 48 V MHEV systems.
