Common Ford Focus 3 steering rack failures

Torn boots, moisture, sensor and software faults in the Ford Focus 3 electric steering rack: symptoms and diagnosis with the MS561.

MSG Equipment notes that a steering rack is under constant load and exposed to water and dust. On the Ford Focus 3 a common cause of failure is a torn dust boot, which lets water and dirt corrode the shaft and wear the gears.

Main causes include moisture, impacts, broken wiring, software errors, torque sensor failure and loss of power. Typical symptoms are:

  • Play and slipping in the steering, extra effort when turning
  • Mechanical hum when turning the wheel (bearing wear)
  • Delayed steering response (sensor or ECU fault)

Specialist workshops use the MS561 controller, with an OBD II port and online updates, for diagnosis.
