Brake pad squeaking: how to fix the problem

Even new brake pads can squeak. MSG Equipment explains causes such as bedding-in and material incompatibility and how to reduce the noise.

Brake pads work by friction, so wear is natural – MSG Equipment notes that front pads wear two to three times faster than rear ones. The article looks at why even freshly fitted pads may squeak and how to deal with it.

Noise from new pads is often caused by a factory surface coating. Bedding the pads in over a few days with occasional firm braking wears the coating off and the squeak usually disappears.

Another cause is incompatibility between the pad friction material and the disc surface. Harder pads last longer but vibrate and squeak more, while softer pads are quieter but wear faster. Choosing matching pads and discs is recommended as the main way to prevent the problem.
