If hydraulic power steering fails, the steering gear keeps working, but the car should not be driven long with a faulty system; see a workshop.
Hydraulic power steering (HPS) adds comfort and safety. Designers ensured the steering gear keeps working even if the assistance fails, but it is still better to have the system repaired than to keep driving with it.
Failures mostly result from wear or improper use. Fluid level should be checked regularly, since low fluid means poor lubrication and early wear. A drive belt that is too tight or too loose also hurts performance.
- Jerking or heavy steering when turning
- Noise with the engine running and steering wheel vibration
- Fluid leaks around the power steering
MSG Equipment recommends diagnosis and repair at workshops with dedicated equipment, which it supplies.
