The symptoms of a failing hydraulic steering pump, its typical service life and maintenance tips to keep it running for longer.
Despite the rise of electric power steering, hydraulic systems remain widespread. The pump that generates system pressure is usually a vane type, less often a gear type. MSG Equipment lists the signs of pump failure:
- Heavy steering after some driving or in hot weather
- Vibration when turning one way, humming or whining at full lock
- Foaming or darkened fluid in the reservoir, a burning smell
- Oil spots under the engine after parking, a squealing belt
A well-maintained pump can exceed 200,000 km. Regular fluid changes, checking the seals, choosing quality fluid and avoiding “repair” additives all help.
