Load testing of hydraulic power steering racks

Using the MS502M test bench with the MS521 loading mechanism to reveal rack defects that no-load testing misses.

Hydraulic steering racks look simple, yet they are a frequent source of post-repair complaints. The main reason is testing the rack only in no-load mode, without resistance to movement. Some defects stay hidden, and once fitted the rack may knock during parking, give uneven effort or feel stiff or loose.

In no-load testing, full pressure only builds at the end positions. Applying resistance creates pressure along the entire stroke, revealing:

  • Internal leakage in the control valve
  • The condition of the cylinder’s central seal
  • Wear in the middle section of the cylinder housing

The MSG Equipment MS502M bench supplies and monitors pressure while the MS521 loading mechanism replicates real driving conditions, making repair results predictable.
