What to do if your car is stuck in the snow: 5 tips

Stay calm and assess the situation, clear around the wheels and rock the car back and forth to build a track: the basics of getting out of snow.

Snow and ice are among the most common winter problems for drivers. When the car gets stuck, the first step is to stay calm, get out and assess whether you can manage or need a tow truck.

  • Clear the snow around the wheels and underbody, using boards or branches if you have no shovel.
  • Rock the car gently forward and back without hard acceleration to build a track.
  • Jack the car up and place mats or boards under the wheels; since they can fly out, drive slowly and make sure no other cars are nearby.
  • If heavy snow is common where you live, prepare snow chains in advance.
