Signs that may reveal odometer tampering on a used car: mismatched electronic records and wear on seats, pedals, brake discs and belts.
According to MSG Equipment, a significant share of used cars show odometer readings that do not reflect reality, and tampering with modern odometers can also damage the car’s electronics. Key signs buyers should look for:
- Odometer readings that differ from those stored in the key, ABS unit or gearbox
- Signs that the instrument cluster has been removed
- Heavy wear on the driver’s seat and seat belts
- Brake discs more worn than the stated mileage suggests
- A polished accelerator pad and worn mat beneath it
- The condition of the timing belt and of belts, wiring and boots under the bonnet
- Tyre tread depth inconsistent with the mileage
