Can you recharge a car air conditioner yourself?

Refrigerant loss, the correct service steps, and why DIY recharging without a leak test can lead to costly compressor failures.

Car A/C systems using R134a or R1234yf normally lose about 10–15 per cent of refrigerant a year, so service is needed roughly every three years, more often on older cars. Proper service includes a leak test, refrigerant recovery, vacuuming, charging and a performance check.

DIY kits are widely sold, but MSG Equipment’s experience shows that self-service often ends in serious damage. Skipping the leak test means charging a leaking system, which then runs short of refrigerant and lubrication with moisture inside, eventually damaging the compressor, expansion valve and condenser.

Full recovery and cleaning also require dedicated equipment. MSG produces equipment for this area, such as the MS111 compressor test bench and the MS101P flushing station.
