Why you need to flush a car’s air conditioning system

If an AC system that lost pressure or had a compressor failure is not flushed, new parts can fail quickly. Signs of contamination and how to flush properly.

According to MSG Equipment, if an AC circuit has been left open or has lost pressure, moisture gets in, aluminium parts corrode and replacing only the failed part is not enough. After a compressor failure the system must also be flushed before a new compressor is fitted, or the new unit will soon fail.

  • Dark oil: worn compressor piston rings
  • White powder: aluminium corrosion caused by acid formed from moisture and refrigerant
  • Rubber particles: O-rings broken down by poor-quality solvents

Brake cleaners, degreasers and carburettor cleaners must never be used for flushing. For this job MSG Equipment makes the MS101P pneumatic flushing station, which circulates fluid in a closed loop and connects to any vehicle.
