Safe, long-lived and low-cost LFP batteries are spreading fast in EVs. Their different voltage values and a step-by-step way to find a faulty module.
Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries stand out for thermal stability, long cycle life, absence of toxic materials and low cost; their main drawback is lower energy density. Citing BloombergNEF, MSG Equipment says LFP already holds over 40% of the EV battery market.
Diagnosis is similar to other Li-ion packs, but voltages differ: nominal cell voltage is 3.2 V and charging voltage 3.65 V. Suggested steps to find a faulty module:
- Read cell voltages from the BMS with a diagnostic scanner
- Remove and visually inspect the suspect module
- Fully charge with balancing, then measure internal resistance and capacity
- Finally, check for voltage drops across the cells
