Diagnosing HPS pumps with the MS604 test bench

The MS604 tests single- and dual-circuit mechanically driven steering pumps by simulating on-car operation. MSG Equipment walks through the test steps.

MSG Equipment’s MS604 test bench evaluates the performance of single- and dual-circuit mechanically driven hydraulic steering pumps by simulating their real operation in a vehicle.

The test sequence described in the article:

  • the pump is secured with a three-jaw chuck and fixing system and connected to the hydraulic line with the supplied adapters,
  • pulley speed and direction are set on the touch screen, and flow in each circuit is measured at around 1000 rpm,
  • flow is shut off for 15–20 seconds to simulate full lock and the pressure gauge is read; opening and closing the valve several times checks the consistency of the pump valves.

Results are compared with catalogue values. The bench is described as easy to use, not requiring high qualifications, and safe thanks to its emergency stop.
