Torque sensors: removal, disassembly and calibration

Many electric steering rack faults come from the torque sensor. With the MS561 controller and MS550 adapter, the sensor can be read and calibrated.

A faulty electric steering rack does not always need replacing; a shop with the right equipment can repair it. In makes such as Subaru, Honda and Mazda, many faults stem from the torque sensor.

  • Different effort needed to turn the wheel left and right
  • The steering wheel turning to one side by itself when the engine starts

The sensor is then removed and inspected: if it only shows wear it is refitted and calibrated, and if it is mechanically damaged it is replaced. Using MSG Equipment’s MS561 controller and MS550 adapter, technicians read the sensor voltages and adjust them via the sensor housing position or the potentiometers on its board.
