48V belt starter-generators in mild hybrids can fail. MSG Equipment explains the solutions that make repair a real alternative to buying a new unit.
Mild hybrids (MHEVs) with a 48V electrical system are spreading fast: they are the cheapest way for manufacturers to meet emission standards, a more affordable hybrid for buyers, and no harder to maintain than conventional cars. Their key component is the belt starter-generator (BSG), which acts as both starter and alternator.
MSG Equipment notes that a failed 48V unit can block the 48V network, drain both the lithium-ion and 12V batteries and leave the car unable to move. Previously the only option was an expensive new unit, while a used one of unknown condition was risky.
According to the article, test benches such as the MS005A that fully diagnose 48V alternators, together with available power electronics spare parts, now make repair a realistic alternative.
