Hybrid traction batteries lose capacity over time. MSG explains why module-level testing and reconditioning with the MS800 is far cheaper than a new battery.
As hybrids become more common, their owners share a typical problem: loss of traction battery capacity. Constant charging and discharging makes modules age unevenly, and a failed cell can trigger a cascade in neighbouring cells. The most common cause is overheating when the battery cooling system is neglected.
New batteries are expensive and used ones are a gamble, so module-level reconditioning is gaining ground. Module condition can only be determined by removing the pack and checking it with a dedicated tester. MSG’s MS800 measures the capacity of up to 36 Ni-MH modules at once, fully automatically and with built-in safety protections.
Case examples from a Lexus RX450h and a Toyota Prius show that replacing only faulty modules costs a fraction of a new battery.
