Damaged dust boots, old brake fluid and worn discs and pads are the main causes of caliper failure. MSG Equipment explains how to prevent them.
According to MSG Equipment, a caliper has a simple structure: a cylinder with a piston, a bracket sliding on guides, a fitting and dust boots. The most common cause of failure is a damaged boot – the steel piston can rust over time, and because of its floating fit even slight corrosion restricts movement. Boot damage often results from pad changes by inexperienced technicians.
The article recommends changing brake fluid at least every three years, or annually in humid climates. Heavily worn discs and pads push the piston further out, which can damage the boot and cause leaks or jamming.
To avoid problems, it advises regular checks of the whole system, replacing worn parts and lubricating the guides on time.
