Short cranking, clean contacts, a charged battery and timely belt and regulator replacement extend the life of the starter and alternator.
Used correctly, a starter and alternator can work trouble-free for years. Because the starter heats up quickly and cools slowly, avoid cranking for more than ten seconds, and switch off headlights before starting in cold weather.
- Keep the battery fully charged; a weak battery wears both battery and starter.
- Keep starter, battery and relay contacts clean, tight and free of oxidation.
- Tension or replace the alternator belt on time; a loose belt wears the pulley.
- Do not skip preventive work such as bushing, bearing and brush replacement.
DIY starter repair is not recommended; unsuitable parts such as the wrong bushings can cause the armature to seize.
