How and with what to flush the engine cooling system

Dirt and scale in the cooling system can overheat the engine. Steps for cleaning the system and radiator when changing coolant.

Today’s cooling systems handle not only engine temperature but also oil, automated gearbox and turbo cooling. MSG Equipment recommends checking coolant level regularly and inspecting hoses, seals, bearings and the thermostat; the article says coolant is usually changed every 50,000–90,000 km.

Scale and dirt build up over time, clogging passages and causing overheating, so the system should be cleaned when coolant is changed:

  • Once the engine is cool, drain the radiator and block.
  • Fill with flushing fluid, run the engine for a while, then drain.
  • Rinse with distilled water and refill with fresh coolant.

Radiator cores can be cleaned with a gentle water stream and the fan by hand. Always follow the manufacturer’s advice.
