A starter motor is a powerful battery-powered DC electric motor that cranks the engine until combustion begins.
How does it work?
- The ignition energises the starter solenoid.
- The solenoid pushes the pinion (starter drive) into the flywheel ring gear.
- Its contacts close and high battery current (100–300 A in cars) flows to the motor.
- The engine cranks and starts; the pinion then retracts.
Types
- Direct drive starters
- Gear-reduction starters with planetary gears – most modern cars
- Start-stop starters with reinforced components
Failure signs
- Single click, no crank
- Slow cranking with a healthy battery
- Grinding noise
- Motor spins but the engine does not turn
- Starter keeps running after the engine starts
AS-PL starters and starter components are available from Vural Otomotiv stock.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my starter crank slowly?
Most often a weak battery or poor connections; otherwise worn brushes, commutator, bushings or burnt solenoid contacts.
Can a starter motor be repaired?
Yes — brushes, bushings, the drive and the solenoid can be replaced individually.
