The starter solenoid is an electromagnetic switch mounted on the starter motor. A small current from the ignition switch lets it control the hundreds of amps the starter draws.
Two jobs
- Mechanical: pulls the plunger and, via the fork, pushes the starter drive into the flywheel ring gear.
- Electrical: closes the heavy-current contacts between the battery cable and the motor.
Inside are a pull-in winding and a hold-in winding; once the contacts close, only the hold-in winding stays energised.
Failure signs
- Single click, no crank
- Intermittent operation
- Starter keeps running after the key is released
- Rapid clicking or weak cranking
MSG Equipment MS031 tests solenoids off the vehicle; AS-PL solenoids and contact kits are in stock at Vural Otomotiv.
Frequently asked questions
Can the solenoid be replaced separately?
Yes, on most starters it is bolted on and can be replaced without changing the whole starter.
