Alternator brushes are small graphite blocks that carry field current to the spinning rotor via its slip rings. They sit in a brush holder, which in most modern alternators is combined with the voltage regulator.
Why do they wear?
They rub constantly against the slip rings, so wear is normal; dust, oil, water, heat and worn slip rings accelerate it.
Signs of worn brushes
- Charge warning light flickering, especially over bumps
- Fluctuating charging voltage or battery voltage only (~12.5 V)
- Alternator stops charging completely
- Charging returns after tapping the alternator
Replace brushes when they are worn below about 5 mm. AS-PL brushes, brush holders and regulators are available from Vural Otomotiv.
